I was working with a client whose preferred method of beginning a new exercise regime was to start walking on her treadmill, 30 minutes a day, four days a week.  She has a treadmill in her bedroom that has been “gathering dust and clothes” for several years and she decided she would get up 30 minutes earlier to walk. After one week, she hadn’t begun her new routine, which she had felt very positive about the week prior.  When I asked her why, she replied “It’s just so hard to jump out of bed when it’s cold & dark in the morning”.  To this I replied, “Then don’t!....jump out of bed.”  I suggested that, when her alarm goes off, she simply begin by taking three deep breaths and focus her attention on herself, her body, and the quiet peace she is experiencing.  I suggested that she then stretch her arms above her head, then pull her knees to her chest, and then slowly sit up.  At this time she is to roll her head around a few times, roll her shoulders, and then reach down to touch her thighs, knees, or toes.  She is to take this time to feel her body, to thank her body, and to stretch and warm up her muscles.  Then she can reach over to the warm sweatshirt and socks she has set by the bed the night before so that she can easily cozy in to them….and then, get out of bed and head to the treadmill.  One week later, she happily reported that she had achieved her goal of walking for 30 minutes, four days that week.  Two months later, she has lost 7 pounds and is now walking for 40 minutes, five days per week.
